What to Do

Activities in the area

Vorden (Low Saxon:Vodden) is a village in the municipality of Bronckhorst in the Dutch province of Gelderland. It is about 10km southeast of Zutphen. Vorden is known for its eight castles, making it one of the most castle-rich villages in the Netherlands.

Walking the Pieterpad

The longest walking path in the Netherland, the Pieterpad, is part of the Grand Randonnee, the hiking path which goes all over Europe. A part of the Pieterpad goes through Vorden and it is a beautiful way to experience the landscape of Gelderland. You can also walk a bit closer to de Kieftskamp, there is a beautiful forest surrounding it and a nice hour long walk can be made there.

Castles and gardens

Vorden has many beautiful castles and manors with gardens that are open to the public. It has the famous “acht kastelen” (“eight castle”) route that you can cycle of which de Kieftskamp is one! We particularly like Kasteel Vorden with the Lodewijkslinde (an ancient Linden tree under which King Louie XIV once rested) as well as Landgoed de Wiersse which has a beautiful garden. Our personal favourite is Klimbos Ruurlo, a forest climbing area with trees and treehouses!

Exploring Zutphen

The nearest city is Zutphen, an historic fortified city on the banks of the River Ijssel with a Hanseatic past. It is one of the most protected city centers in the Netherlands, with nearly 400 national monuments and over 500 municipal monuments, including many churches and medieval houses, primarily dating back to the 14th century. Several of these monuments have been turned into museums and the city also boasts a Stedelijk Museum Zutphen.
